Regional Overview and Attractions

The Great Ocean Road - Otways Coast & Country

Otways Coast

From Lorne, the Great Ocean Road winds into the Otways Coast, through Wye River, Kennet River, Eongara and Skene's Creek, arriving the popular coastal resort town of Apollo Bay.

The Great Ocean Road continues around past the stunning coastland scenery of Morengo, to Cape Otway with its Lightstation Complex, one of the most significant lighthouse installations in Australia, to the small coastal township of Johanna.

Otways Country

In Otways Country, you will find the major inland town of Colac and the townships of Forrest, Deans Marsh, Birregurra, Beeac, Gellibrand, Beech Forest and Lavers Hill. This region contains numerous features and attractions including numerous lakes and waterfalls and the world's third largest volcanic plain surrounding Colac.

Deans Marsh is a small but vibrant community. There is a Growers Market at The Marsh Hall and cricket ground on the first Sunday of the month.

Visit Martians Bar and Cafe, an intimate country venue. Life entertainment is often available on Friday and Saturday nights. Listen to talented musicians, such as Chris Wilson, Beachniks, Dave Steele, Tiffany Erkhardt. Visit the Moon Shine Meditation & Healing Centre and Gentle Annies Berry Farm or the recently established Deans Marsh arboretum.

Otways Country:
Colac is the largest town in the Otways region with a population of 14,000.

Lake Colac covers almost 2,000 hectares and is popular for fishing, camping, rowing, sailing and picnics.

The Lake Colac foreshore and adjacent Meredith Park is ideal for family outings with its picnic tables, bbqs, toilet block, boat ramp and shady trees.

On the foreshore of Lake Colac you will find the Colac Botanic Gardens, covering 15 hectares and over 1000 horticultural specimens - more species than any other provincial garden in Victoria.

Surrounding Colac is the third largest volcanic plain in the world. Nearby Red Rock lookout overlooks much of the estimated 8,000 year old volcanic complex with its 40 separate eruption points, the 25,000 hectare Lake Corangamite - Australia's largest permanent salt lake - Mount Elephant, Camperdown and a chain of other lakes and hills.

The Old Beechy Rail Trail is a 43km rail trail through the lush Otway forests. It is open to walkers and cyclists and follows the route of the narrow gauge railway built from Colac via Gellibrand River to Beech Forest and Lavers Hill.

Close by Beech Forest, the Otway Fly Treetop Walk is said to be the longest and highest treetop walkway in the World. It is 600 metres long, averages 25 metres above the ground and includes a thrilling swaying cantilever section and a 45 metre tower that offers a spectacular view over the treetops towards the coast.

Just outside of Forrest, Lake Elizabeth is home to platypus and a large and varied population of water birds. It offers a number of walks of varying duration.

Apollo Bay

Drive from Deans Marsh through undulating farming country to the township of Forrest and take a slight detour to walk around the serene bush track of Lake Elizabeth.

Drive through the hinterland of Mountain Ash, Mytle and Beech forests to Skenes creek before entering Apollo Bay, a bustling town with the flavour of an English fishing village.

From here it is a short trip to the famous Twelve Apostles and the breathtaking Otway Fly rain forest canopy walk.
