Nature & Wildlife

Fundraising Drive for Koala Habitiat

A small parcel of land in Cape Otway holds a tremendous
opportunity for Australian wildlife. Flanked on one side
by the Great Otway National Park and on the other by
the Conservation Ecology Centre (CEC), this land has
the potential to become an important habitat corridor for
koalas and other native animals.
With the support of their Patron, the Hon. Steve
Bracks AC, the CEC is staging a drive to raise the funds
necessary to fi nalise the purchase of the property. A
generous grant from the R E Ross Trust has helped
signifi cantly, but by 30 June another $45,000 is needed.

Whale Sighting

Year round whale sightings onthe Great Ocean Road
Just as reports of the fi rst whale sighting of the season
come in - we’re also hearing about a whale of a different
breed that can now be seen in the grounds of the Cape
Otway Lightstation.
Local artist-in-residence Peter Day has worked with a
team of volunteers to create an 18-metre-long, life size
geoglyph sculpture.
The Southern Right Whale is the fi rst in a series of whale
sculptures planned for the precinct, with a Humpback,
Blue Whale and Killer Whale all in the pipeline. Other

Whale Watching

Whale Watching Great Ocean Road

Southern right whales along The Great Ocean Road.

Whales can be sighted between June and October all along the Great Ocean Road.

Come within 100 metres of these beautiful mammals as they swim close to the shore and can be seen from a the road and most beaches.

See female southern right whales return to the nursery waters for many weeks, to calve and allow the young to feed gathering strength for their journey back to the sub-Antarctic waters. The males, yearlings and young adults remain further out to sea.

Great Otway National Park

Great Otway National Park

Within easy walking distance from both Otway Escapes self contained cottages is one of Australia's most pristine and diverse National Parks.

The Great Otway National Park incorporates the former Otway National Park and Angahook-Lorne, Carlisle and Melba Gully State Parks, as well as areas of State forest and other Crown land. The new national park covers 103,000 hectares, an increase in park area of more than 60,000 hectares.

Lake Elizabeth Walk

Lake Elizabeth - Forrest Victoria

This is one of our favourite bush walking trails and we believe a must see for any visitors to the Otways.

Its an easy 15 minute drive from your Otway Escapes accommodation to the lake, picnic and camping area.

Tucked away in the Otways not far from Forrest, Lake Elizabeth is a beautiful mountain lake. There is a free camping ground and walking trails. The Trail is a 2km shared path, and allows cyclists to ride from Forrest all the way to Lake Elizabeth.

Meet Local Wildlife - Echidnas

Australian Echidna

Wildlife and birdlife is abundant along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria Australia. See Australian wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas in their native habitats. Observe the spectacular Australian bird - king parrots, eastern rosellas, galahs, grey thrush, blue wrens and wedge tailed eagles.

In the evenings, listen to the ‘mo - poke’ call from the Southern boobook owl and the random crackling from frogs. Be sure to step outside to see how clear the country night sky is - a star gazers dream.
